Review of Wake Up Call by Victoria Ashley!!!

Synopsis:
Avery Hale had spent her whole childhood abused by her drunken, hopped-up parents. Broken from a lifetime of hate and pain she grew up realizing that trust and love just didn't exist. Not in her world at least. After turning the age of eighteen, she packed up and moved far away determined to escape her hurtful past and start a new life. Once on her own she comes to the conclusion that the emptiness still exist. Doing what she had to to survive she found herself mixed up in exotic dancing and meaningless sexual relationships unable to feel anything, for anyone. She was sure that her life was worthless and there was nothing left for her. On the other hand, so she thought.

After meeting a beautiful stranger, Jace, her life suddenly is turned upside down. Everything that she truly believed suddenly gets questioned and then she is left to figure out if there is really more to her than she could ever have imagined. Jace, having some secrets of his own puts the pain of his own past behind to do what he can to help Avery. Can the love of another broken person be enough to help Avery, or is she already too far gone?

Avery's life is pulled in many directions as she tries to find herself, and not everyone and thing is what they seem to be in this story of love, trust and opening up. Finding herself and learning to love herself might just be the hardest thing she's ever had to do.

THE REVIEW

I loved this book!  I felt horrible for Avery, and was happy that she found someone to love her.

Avery Hale is really down on her luck.  After escaping from a life of abuse at the hands of her father, she's forced to turn to stripping to make money.  When she's kicked out of her apartment, she's feeling her lowest.

Her world changes when she meets Jace Montgomery in his diner.  She saw him the night before at the club, and is amazed he's more goodlooking up close.  When he saves her outside of the strip club from being assaulted, her world changes.  He takes her home, gives her a place to stay and a job at his diner. She's thankful, but leary of his intentions at first.

When the attraction starts between the two, they both fight it.  Also, Avery doesn't do relationships. After seeing her mother get beaten from the hands of her father, she doesn't want anything to do with relationships.  Soon though, Jace proves to her that he's there for her and wants to take care of her.

At times, Avery was her own worst enemy.  Her fears about her parents finding her, cause her to make some heisty decisions.  Decisions that put her in danger, and almost cause her her life.  When she really needs him, Jace is there to help her out again, once again saving her.

It takes some time for Avery to realize her feelings for Jace are for real.  That they aren't something to fear.  Because of her past, she has a hard time dealing with the fact that she's loveable, and that she's capable of loving someone without getting punished.

I felt horrible for Avery, and was happy to see her grow and mature.  It took her a little bit to get used to relying on people, and knowing she could trust people with her feelings.  Jace was her rock when she desperately needed one, and wouldn't allow her to push him away when she got too close to him.

I loved Jace.  The only thing I would have liked would have been more love scenes between him and Avery together.  He was used to taking care of people he cared about, and Avery was no exception.  He loved her completely, and struggled to make her understand he was not going anywhere.

THE EXCERPT:
My heart stopped and suddenly it was hard to breathe. His voice always had that effect on me. It was like poison slowly running through my veins killing me bit by bit. Like a drug that I couldn't get enough of even though I was almost down to my last breath.

Jace took a step forward and grabbed my hand. He slowly trailed his fingers over my face and backed me into the wall. My heart stopped again if that was even possible. "You can't leave," he whispered. "I need you." His warm breath kissed my lips as he bit his bottom lip and placed both of his hands around my face. They were warm and soft to the touch. Too big for my fragile face, although I wanted to bury myself in them. "Breathe. There is no one here but the two of us. Breathe," he whispered.

Then there's the hunk'a'licious biker neighbour finally showing interest in her. If only she isn't about to face her next obstacle in life, the one she ran from six years ago: her ex husband.
Talon Marcus is the president of the Hawks Motorcycle Club. For two years he's had his eye on the quiet, reclusive, yet sassy, neighbour Zara. Finally, he has the chance to claim her as his woman. Just when her past catches up with her, she'll need, not only his protection, but the help from his biker brothers. Now, if only she'd stop fighting him along the way.

  Excerpts
Teaser 1: Unlocking the door and swinging it open, I realized I should have hoped a little harder. Talon stood there looking spunky in dark jeans, a black tee, and motorcycle boots. His hair looked wet from a recent shower, and I wondered if I could blow-dry it for him with my mouth. My traitorous heart leaped, my body tingled, and...what the frig? How'd my underwear get wet already? Wait, had I peed myself? I looked down at the floor. Nope, wasn't wet. That meant only one thing. “I need to get laid or break out my Gold Finger on maximum speed.” Deanna burst out laughing, and Talon seemed smug. I looked at them both confused. Oh, hell no. I did not just say that aloud. See! Drinks, Talon, and me. It was a no-go!

Guest Post by Author Angee Taylor!!

THE GUEST POST:

Advice for as aspiring Author...

Oh wow, advice for an aspiring author. I have only been at this for less than a year but I have learned so much in that time.

First thing, I learned was DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT think you can self-edit. Your mind edits your writing as you go and you miss a lot. Find a good editor. You can find freelance editors that are reasonable and great. If you want referrals, just ask someone. I’ll be happy to send you to a few.

Second thing- Think long and hard before you publish with a cover. Do you absolutely love that cover? Are you proud of it? Is it representative of you and your book? If not find another and make sure you get a professional cover. It just looks better and usually sells better.

The third thing I learned was just put that story on paper or on my laptop something. If you never write it how do you know if it will be a success or not. Spit it out—You can always tweak and fine tune it later.

Finally as long as one person enjoys your work then you are a success.

THE AUTHOR HERSELF:

Angee was born in Houston, Texas in 1977, to an interesting family. Her mother and father separated when she was young. She lived with her mother who later remarried a wonderful man, who had a huge impact on her as she grew up. Angee has always had a love of reading, mostly paranormal. As a child, she would sneak up at late night when her mom thought she was sleeping, to read. They moved around a lot, eventually settling in Deep East Texas. Angee married at a young age and eventually divorced. She has raised her now 16 year old son alone. Angee works full time as a pre-hospital nurse and sometimes sees things that would make the rest of us have nightmares. On other days, she is blessed to see miracles. These things are what drive her to write.

In 2006, she was diagnosed with a rare disease, shortly after that she was told she would be on full disability in five years and most likely to be dead in ten. She’s fought to live a normal life every day since and is beating those odds. She works at a demanding job, is a single mom, cares for an elderly mother, and two dogs.

Angee describes her job as- “I fight to save people’s lives. Sometimes I lose, sometimes I win. It's the emotional roller coaster of that job, which leads me to writing. I'm able to put those emotions into my characters and let them out of my heart and soul.”

“I’m bored!”
“How can you say that you are bored when I am reading to you one of the funniest books I have read in a long time?” said Horse in an exasperated tone. When Little Nani shrugged her shoulders, Horse had retreated to his favourite rocking chair in a corner of the room.
“Can I go out and make angels?” asked Little Nani, who was upside down, standing on her hands.
“Don’t be silly. You can only make angels in the snow, not in the rain,” said Horse without raising his eyes from the book.
“Can I go out and jump in the pools?” asked Little Nani, who was hopscotching all over the room.
“If you go out you will get soaking wet, and then you will catch a bad cold, and then you won’t be able to go out for a long time,” said the impatient horse. He didn’t like being interrupted while reading.
“Then I will cast a spell to make the sun come back,” said Little Nani, trying to take her magic wand out of her pocket while rolling on the floor. Big Billy, watching her efforts to take her magic wand out, and fearing that Little Nani could make the rain turn into a tempest, quickly pecked Little Nani’s hand.
“Ouch!” exclaimed Little Nani. “That hurt!”
She tried once more to take her magic wand from her pocket, but this time it was Skinny Nikki who pecked Little Nani’s hand.
“Ouch!” exclaimed Little Nani again.
It was pretty clear by now to Little Nani that she wasn’t going to have any fun that day. She thought that the rain was boring and, folding her arms with an angry look, she sat down in a corner.

As well as writing, I love to read and have been known to get through four or five books a week. Book Title: With You (Tear Asunder, .5) Author: Nashoda Rose Genre: Contemporary Romance Release Date: December 27, 2013 Hosted by: Book Enthusiast Promotions

Synopsis
Sculpt is an illegal fighter. He’s also the lead singer of a local rock band. No one knows his real name. And from the moment I met him, he made me forget mine. In order to convince Sculpt to give me self-defence lessons, I had to follow his one rule—no complaining or he’d walk. I didn’t think it would be a problem. I’d been bucked off horses, kicked and stepped on. I could handle a few bruises. What I hadn’t anticipated was landing on my back with Sculpt on top of me and my entire body burning up for him. I tried to ignore it. Then I tried to stop it. I failed of course. And having a hot, tattooed badass on top of me week after week, acting cool and completely immune to what he was doing to my body—it was frustrating as hell, so I broke his rule—I complained. Then he kissed me.
Author’s Note: This novella is Sculpt and Emily’s beginning and how they met. It is an extra and not required to be read before “Torn from You”. Their story and what happens to them is the novel “Torn from You”. Warning: Huge cliff-hanger. Like huge! But “With You” and “Torn from You” are released on the same day. *Due to sexual content and strong language not recommended for readers under 18.

Excerpt
I wrapped my fingers around his bicep, well, wrapping was an exaggeration as they couldn’t even come close to circling anything on him except maybe his baby finger. I tugged while squeezing.

“Sculpt?”

He spun around looking on either side of him for the missing girl, then his eyes ran the length of me as if I was up for auction. He looped his arm around my waist, tugged me in tight. I heard the tinsel girl huff then her high heels clicked on the cement floor as she stormed away. Sculpt leaned in so his lips were close to nibbling on my ear. My breath hitched, and a vibration went through my body. I wasn’t sure if it was from nerves or something else entirely, then I decided it was both.

“Not my type,” he said in a deep throaty whisper. “Too young, and I don’t do . . .” Short. Frumpy. Drab. The words never left my mouth, instead I did what I always did when guys used to make fun of me—I curled my toes. “Brunettes,” he finished.

Oh. I pulled back, and he let me, but his arm remained around my waist, hand resting on my hip. Dry mouth was rearing its ugly head as I stared up at him, taking in the slight curve of his nose, his angled cheekbones ,and god, he had this dimple in his chin I wanted to run my finger across.

“Where’d the blonde go?” To find more bleach for her hair. “You scare her away?” His breath tickled the sensitive place just below my ear, and my nerves shot off so violently that I knew I’d have fallen flat on my face if he’d let me go.

“Um well no, not exactly. I told her I was your sister and needed to talk to you.” His brows rose, and he wasn’t smiling . . . Shit.

“Sister? I don’t have a sister, at least not one I’m aware of. Unless you’re trying to tell me something?” There was an edge to his voice, rough with a hint of darkness. My mouth gaped.

“No. God, no.It’s just . . . I wanted to talk to you alone.” His gaze dripped down my body then back up again. I felt like a piece of steak, and he was appraising me to see if I was worth the price.

“So, if not my sister then what do you want from me?” The reason fled my mind, and I stood staring at him like that stupid piece of steak.

“I . . . ah . . . well.” His tongue slid across his upper lip wetting the surface and making it glisten. Jesus, did he even know he was doing that?

“I’m not going to fuck you. I may fight illegally, but I don’t fuck illegally.”

My sudden mind boggle vanished, and ire replaced it.

“I’m twenty for your information, and I wouldn’t even consider having sex—” He frowned, and his lips pursed together. The look sent a flush into my cheeks, because honestly, the guy looked even hotter with a scowl.

“Having sex? Can you even say the word fuck?”

“Yeah, fuck you.”

THE EXCERPT:
Vienna and I had sat on this beach, and so many others in Rathe, more times than I could count. I turned my head and the glittering sand turned into a mirage of a young Vienna. I wasn’t delusional, I knew it was just me reminiscing, but there she was, skipping down the beach several yards away. She saw me, waved, and ran over to me.
She looked so real. My mind retained every detail, right down to the sand in her black, windblown hair. “Have you seen all the shells that washed ashore?”
Of all the conversations we ever had, this one was my favorite. One of the first times we discussed being more than friends. “Yeah.” I smiled. “How many have you collected?”
She bent down and picked up a piece of sea glass, holding it up and admiring it in the moonlight. “Only one. The rest belong here, on the beach—or in the ocean, if the tide chooses to carry them away.” She tossed the sea glass back into the sand and sat down beside me. “I don’t keep them. I just like admiring them, holding them between my fingers and feeling how different each one is. Except for this one.” She removed a shell from her armband. At first it looked all white, but then I noticed the hints of green and silver. “Feel it. It’s hard and soft at the same time. The edges are ragged, but run your fingers along the silver veins—they’re soft as silk.”
I rubbed it, noting all the different textures. “You’re right.”
“It reminds me of you.” Her ivory cheeks blushed and she looked down, studying the shell in my fingers. “Something so unique should be treasured. Forever.”
“The shell?”
She leaned toward me—barely an inch—but it was enough to feel the energy building between us. “You, Rownan. I would treasure you forever.”
It was the first time I kissed her. The first time I had kissed anyone. We were barely teenagers, but I remembered it like it happened yesterday.
I pulled away and smiled at her.
She groaned, frustrated. “I was afraid that would happen.”
“What’s wrong?” Panic flooded me. Had I turned some part of her to stone like Treygan had done when he kissed Kimber?
“I knew if you kissed me, I’d be forever ruined for anyone else. No other selkie, or any creature for that matter, will ever top that.”
Sweet relief.
“Good. Because I hope you never kiss anyone else.” I handed her shell back to her. “I want to keep you—I mean, treasure you. Forever.”

Meet the Author

Gemma James (a pseudonym for Christina Jean Michaels) loves to explore the darker side of sex in her fiction. She's morbidly curious about anything dark and edgy and enjoys exploring the deviant side of human nature. Her stories have been described as being "not for the faint of heart." She lives with her husband and their four children--three rambunctious UFC/wrestling-loving boys and one girl who steals
 everyone's attention.

  Excerpt

My breath grew shallow, from arousal, from fear. Gage was good at that—eliciting strong emotions that contrasted so sharply, they knocked a person on their ass in total confusion. I shouldn’t want him. I should scream at him to get the hell out of my house and never come back. I should get a freaking restraining order. As if the turmoil inside me didn’t exist, I set our omelets on the table and calmly took a seat across from him. “What did you mean by boundaries?” I stabbed a bite and shoved it in my mouth. Raising my eyes to his turned out to be a mistake. His hypnotic stare paralyzed me; I couldn’t look away if my life depended on it. I fell into the ocean of his gaze and almost missed the satisfied quirk of his lips. Almost. “You know by now that a relationship with me won’t be your standard variety. You’ll have rules that govern your behavior.” “My behavior?” “Yes. I expect you to obey me.” He set his fork down and winced. “But last year I was cruel to you and that’s not how I normally treat a woman. Not even when they beg me to hurt them beyond what I’m comfortable with.” “Then why?” I choked out. Everything he’d done hit me square in the chest, and his admission that he’d been exceptionally cruel hurt more than it should. “I wanted to destroy what was his.” He lowered his head with a frown. At least he had the grace to look ashamed. “Congratulations.” I let my fork drop, satisfied with the clatter it made. “You succeeded.” “No, I didn’t. Your strength is both my frustration and my undoing. There’s nothing more irritating or sexier on a woman.” He took a bite, and his gaze veered up to mine. “And to clarify on what I mean by boundaries, we’ll set limits this time. You’ll have a safe word.” “You’re talking as if we’re going to be together.” “I’m not leaving here without you, Kayla.”
